Born: April 15, 1936. Death: August 18, 1995
Both as a poet and short story writer Knud Holst had his basis in the 1960s modernism.
His debut poems ”Dementi” (Disclaimer) from1962 are dealing with the relationship between the ego and reality, something very typical of the time period. The first short stories, ”Dyret” (Beast) from 1963 and ”Asfaltballet” (Asphalt Ballet) from 1965, revolve around the psychological state of tension, often everyday situations where a threatening undertone becomes audible, whether the style is realistic or abstract-symbolic.
As several other 1960s modernists Knud Holst sought gradually toward greater simplicity in the lyrics and more realism in prose form, as he extended the register including children's book series. At the same time the lyrics are often rooted in a Vendsyssel local environment such as ”Udstedsdigte” (1976), ”Min bedstefars nat og andre almanakhistorier”(My Grandfather's night and other almanak stories) (1978) and ”Katrines hus” (Katherine’s house) (1989).
In 1958-78 Knud Holst was married to writer colleague Kirsten Holst, with whom he had three daughters, including Hanne-Vibeke Holst.
